Textile products thus cater to a basic human need, they are among the most important goods fabricated and traded by mankind and have thus played a central role in history.

The archaeological surveys and studies have found that Textile industry is not the product of last few centuries; about four thousand years ago, the people of Harappa civilization were good enough in weaving and the spinning of cotton.

In Asia, Pakistan is termed as the 4th largest producer of cotton with the third largest spinning capacity, after China and India, and put share up to 5% to the global spinning capacity. You must have an idea that after agriculture, the Textile industry in Pakistan is the principal manufacturing industry and has an overpowering impact on the country’s economy. It plays a magnificent role in earning foreign exchange and opening doors towards employment in the country. Traditionally speaking, garment & textile industry is considered as one of the industries that has offered gigantic employment ratio both for trained and untrained labor.

Pakistan also has significant textile production and a raw material base that partly feeds into apparel exports. Many of the world renowned brands are manufactured in Pakistan keeping high standard of international quality and competitiveness

May be because we are having a competitive labor image in front of the world and our image is also shaky at international level, because of the long run existing tension of terrorism, confusion in politics, and many other internal issues.

  • Besides these major issues, exporters of the textile industry cannot successfully market their products since buyers are not feeling comfortable in visiting Pakistan due to unfavorable circumstances within the country.
  • Moreover, industry needs to extend Research & Development sector, there is also a lack of development in the cotton sector and lack in modernized equipments; the latest material handling techniques also needs to be acquired. Developed countries are using the expertise to increase the productivity of their cotton production. On the flip side, in Pakistan, research on advanced level has been done by private sector. Though once in a while government offers support to industry, but mostly the government reforms are not properly communicated to the real industry people.
  • Furthermore, there are hardly any training programs to polish/develop the skills of labor that is why the craftsman is entirely depend upon their inherited expertise with no progression and there is no further development towards technical knowledge. So there is a need of technical training staff to main and run the industry with full efficiency.
  • There is a need to tackle some issues within the industry; like the high cost of production resulting from an instantaneous rise in the energy costs has been the primary cause of concern for the industry. We also need to deal with the lack in raw material prices and the export performance of textile sector.
  • During the last few decades, the garment & textile industry in Pakistan has seen the toughest period, so this sector needs to secure latest emerging opportunities by adhering to global best practices and have to adapt rapidly changing technologies.
  • The Industry with the help of government should work collectively to facilitate product diversification; this will be advantageous to advance the fibers other than cotton such as acrylic, nylon, viscose, polyester, wool and silk and obviously this will add more flavors and worth in our textiles.
  • International garment market demands for finished value added products such as garments with a large percentage of manmade fiber content, Pakistan’s performance remains low in comparison to its main competitors, India and Turkey.
  • Furthermore, in counting our strengths, we can better lay down factories “on best practices”. We have potential of improving confidence among buyers by giving them good level of services.
  • When it comes to Textile & Garment industry, we are self reliance, we have manufacturing flexibility, we have an abundance of raw material production, our labor is economical, we are getting rich in design expertise and in educated designers; in short we have our own market at national level, so we just need to be more progressive in further reforms.
  • One of the main competitive advantages for Pakistan is that the apparel and textile sectors have low labor costs, with additional capabilities including raw cotton production, and supportive government policies through up-gradation funds.
  • We being quality conscious have a track record of excellent performances, so we should keep on trying our level best in enhancing our market to all the continents and to establish our name worldwide.
  • Pakistan has emerged as one of the major cotton textile product suppliers in the world with a share of world yarn trade about 30 percent and cotton fabric 8 percent. Textile sector is the backbone of our economy having 56 percent of our total exports and 38 percent job creation in the manufacturing sector and holds great importance as it significantly contributes to our exports and foreign exchange earnings.
  • We are also having capability of producing man made fibers, we have large spinning sector with major qualified manpower. We are state of the art printing and dyeing machinery.
  • Pakistan being cotton growing nation has absolute advantage. Pakistan is the fourth largest country (behind China, India, and the United States) and amongst the world’s 70 cotton growing countries, but given the rising demand of its local textile industry, it has become a net importer.
  • There is a school of thought that the unhealthy government policies is the key reason of the decline of textile export of Pakistan. Like the energy & electricity crises, gas shortages, tight monetary policy, lack of new investment and power shut downs resulted in considerable unemployment resulting in law & order situation.
  • It also demanded that the government introduce safeguards through tariff and non-tariff measures against inroads of synthetic yarns and fabrics into the domestic market, and provide incentives for exports by matching the regional support package.
  • But with the passage of time, Pakistan is transforming itself from being a stagnant economy to fast-paced emergent economy as a result of the structural reforms introduced by the government in the areas of investment, business and trade in addition to covering social, political, judiciary and security.
  • On the road towards solving the problems, this forum PGF will help you in developing to specify schemes & standards that would add value to the textiles chain.
